Frank J. Bailey Elected Trustee

January 11, 2002

Newton, MA (January 11, 2002): Senior Housing Properties Trust (NYSE: SNH) today announced that Mr. Frank J. Bailey has been elected a Trustee.

Mr. Bailey was elected to fill a vacancy created when Dr. Bruce M. Gans resigned to join the Board of Directors of Five Star Quality Care, Inc. (AMEX: FVE), a former subsidiary of SNH which was spun out to SNH shareholders on December 31, 2001. Mr. Bailey's term will extend to the 2003 annual meeting of SNH shareholders.

Mr. Bailey is an attorney and a partner of the Boston based law firm of Sherin & Lodgen LLP.
